Thaipusam 大宝森节

Hindus celebrate Thaipusam in the 10th month of the Tamil lunar calendar during full moon in honour of their deity Lord Subramaniam, also known as Lord Muruga. During Thaipusam, which is a day of penance and thanksgiving, many devotees in a trance-like state carry kavadis by piercing their bodies, cheeks and tongues with sharp metal hooks. Some devotees walk on sharp knives and burning coal. In Kuala Lumpur, the deity’s jeweled chariot is led in a mass procession through the streets of the city, culminating at Batu Caves.

大宝森节落在淡米尔月历的10月，也就是月满之时，虔诚的信徒为祭拜苏伯马廉神，也称姆鲁咖神，将每年举行大型的膜拜仪式。大宝森节也是牺牲和感恩的节日。信徒们不惜身躯的痛楚将背着很重的卡瓦迪（kavadi），并以各种尖锐的针和铁钩穿刺在自己的身体、脸颊、和舌头上；更有信徒也会在尖刀和烈火炭上走过，以表示对姆鲁咖神的敬爱。在吉隆坡，黑风洞就是每年大宝森节庆典举行的地方，上百万的信徒将会参与大型的游行盛事和膜拜仪式。

Chinese New Year 农历新年

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring festival, is the most important celebration for Chinese people all over the world including in Malaysia. The celebration starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon, 15 days later. The 15th day of Chinese New Year is the Lantern Festival (or Chap Goh Mei). Preparations begin about a month before Chinese New Year, where the Chinese shop for decorations, food and drinks, new clothing, groceries and tidbits. Chinese New Year songs are heard in shopping complexes and there are many seasonal sales and promotions. Chinatown at Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur is an ideal place to experience the excitement of the pre-festive celebration. On the eve of Chinese New Year, members of the family gather at home for a reunion dinner. The elderly will give the young red packets containing money, better known as ang pau, with the hope that they will grow up safe and well. On the first day of Chinese New Year and several days that follow, Chinese families hold open houses. This is the time when relatives and friends, regardless of their race and religion, will visit one another, exchanging good wishes and gifts like tangerines (called Kam in Cantonese, meaning “Gold”) and other traditional New Year delicacies.

农历新年也称春节，是全球华人的一个重要的传统节日，也是华人农历新一年的开始；从年初一庆祝至元宵。华人为准备农历新年的来临，通常在一个月前就开始大扫除、选购新年饰品、过节食品、新衣衫等等，以迎接新的一年的到来。大街小巷都会播放新年歌曲，气氛热闹。如果想亲身感受农历新年前夕的浓浓气氛，那就一定要到吉隆坡的茨场街去逛逛。除夕当晚，全家成员都会一起吃团圆饭。长辈们也会发红包，也称压岁钱，给晚辈，希望他们平安如意。大年初一，华人家庭都会去长辈的家拜年，以各种各样的礼品道贺，最常见的当然是柑了。粤语称“金”，也是取个好意头的意思。

Wesak Day 卫塞节

This is the day that marks the birth of Buddha, the day he became enlightened and the day he died. On this day, Buddhists hold grand ceremonies in temples where they pray and chant. Talks on Buddhism are also held on this auspicious day. At night, devotees light joss sticks, lay fresh flowers at the altars and hold candlelight vigils. They then walk around the altar, where the image of Buddha sits, three times. This is the Buddhist way of praying homage, offering prayers and seeking blessings from the Lord Buddha, which signifies this religious occasion.

卫塞节是纪念佛陀的诞生、成佛、和捏磐的节日。佛教徒通常在庙里举行大型的祈祷和诵经活动。此外，佛教讲座会也会在当天举行。节日当晚，信徒们会手拿香烛和把鲜花撒在佛台上，再绕着佛台走三圈，以表示对佛陀的崇拜和尊敬。

Tadau Kaamatan 丰收节

The harvesting celebration, Tadau Kaamatan, is an important occasion celebrated by the ethnic groups (particularly the Kadazans and Bajaus) of Sabah. This is a celebration of thanksgiving offered by the farmers to the Rice gods. Prayers are also held in hope for a bountiful harvest the following year.

沙巴州的丰收节是卡达山、巴曹等族人的一个极为重要的节庆，目的是为了酬谢上苍恩赐的好丰收和酬拜稻神，以及祈求来年会有更好的丰收。

Gawai Dayak 嘉华节

Started in 1915, Hari Gawai is celebrated by the Ibans to mark the end of the paddy harvest season. On this day, the Ibans invite their friends, some of different ethnic groups, to their longhouses to join in the merriment. At the start of the ceremony, the tribal chief will conduct a prayer session seeking blessings from the gods and spirits. This is usually followed by dances performed by men who are attired in warring costumes. Next, comes the most important part of the ceremony – the Miring. In this ritual, an elderly will hold two chickens (one white and the other red) up high; and in swaying motions, move them above the guests’ heads,
all the time muttering a chant for peace, safety, protection and plentiful harvest.

砂拉越伊班族的嘉华节始于1915年，象征丰收季节即将结束的意思。节日当天，伊班族会邀请各族好友前往长屋同欢共庆这节日。节日典礼的开端会先由族长主持一项慰籍神灵与鬼魂的传统祭式。接着，一个身穿传统战士服装的男子就会依次地跳起英雄舞。然后，一项重要的仪式称为米令的仪式就会开始。仪式是由年长的祭司高举一只白色和一只红色的小公鸡，象征式地在宾客头顶上挥摆，嘴一边念着祷文，祈求神灵保佑族人安居乐业，丰衣足食。

Bazaar Ramadhan 斋戒月市集

During the month of Ramadhan, fasting (abstinence from food and water) is rigidly practised daily from sunrise to sunset. This is also the time when Muslims should abstain from evil thoughts and deeds. During the month of Ramadhan, all Malaysians regardless of race get to savour traditional Malay cuisine, as food stalls will be set up along roadside for Muslims to break fast.

斋戒月期间，回教徒必须在每天太阳升起后直至傍晚进行斋戒（不能吃喝食品），同时也要远离不好的思想和欲望。斋戒月市集通常在下午4时开始营业，为准备在傍晚开斋的回教徒提供各式各样的马来传统食物和饮料选择。不过，至今的斋戒月市集已经成为马来西亚各族的喜爱，有的友族朋友更与回教同事们一起开斋，形成另一种文化。

Merdeka Month Celebration (Independence Day) 国庆日

Merdeka Day (Independence Day) falls on 31 August. The National Day celebrations often include exhibitions of the nation’s history, fireworks display and a grand parade attended by Their Majesties, the King and Queen, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.

每年的8月31日都是马来西亚的国庆日。全国人民都会在这重要的日子一起欢庆国家成功争取独立的这一天。庆祝节目包括独立历程展览会，烟花表演还有隆重的大游行都会在当天举行。马来西亚崇高的最高元首和元首后、首相、国家级贵宾和内阁成员每年都会参与其盛。

Hari Raya Aidilfitri 开斋节

The celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri symbolizes the end of the fasting month which falls on the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. During Hari Raya, children start the day by asking for forgiveness from their parents and the other elders in their family. After that, the family will proceed to the mosque for prayers. Following that, families will have open houses, where delicious food and cakes specially prepared for the festival are served to relatives and friends who come to visit.

开斋节代表在回厉的第9个月的斋戒月的结束，以及迎接回厉新年的到来。节日当天，孩子们会先向家里的长辈和父母以及家庭成员请求原谅，然后才到回教堂去祈祷。接着，各个家庭都会进行开放门户，准备佳肴美食款待到访的亲朋好友们。

Deepavali 屠妖节

Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is the most important celebration for the Indian community. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, of light over darkness. On the eve of this glorious day, Indian women decorate the entrance to the hall with rangoli to welcome their guests. Oil lamps (called vikku) will be lit in and around the house. In the morning of Deepavali, cakes, fruits and new clothes that will be consumed and used for the day are placed on banana leaves. After the morning preparation, a coconut will be broken and the whole family gathers to pray. Sweet smelling incense is then burnt adding to the festive mood of the day. A mark made of special dye is then put on the foreheads of the children. After bath and in their brand new clothes, the family then proceeds to the temple for prayers.

屠妖节，也称光明节，既是印度族中最大的节日。它象征着光明战胜黑暗，正义战胜邪恶的意思。屠妖节前夕，除了点灯，印度妇女也喜欢以“rangoli”来装饰厅堂和门前，以表示对来宾的欢迎。屠妖节的早晨，仪式需要用到的糕点、水果和新衣服，都必须摆在香蕉叶上。准备妥当后，剥开一粒椰子，全家一起祈祷和焚甘文烟。父母会在孩子们的头上擦上一点油，之后便沐浴、换上新衣裳，才到庙寺去祈祷。

Hari Raya Haji 哈芝节

Hari Raya Haji falls on the 10th day of the twelfth month of the Muslim calendar. It is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. During Hari Raya Haji or the day after, a cow or a goat is sacrificed in the vicinity of the mosque after prayers. The meat from the slaughtered animal is then distributed to the poor.

哈芝节落在回厉的第12个月的第10日，也称为牺牲的日子。哈芝节当天回教堂里将举行祈祷会，感谢上苍的恩赐。次日，回教徒便会在回教堂举行宰杀牛或羊等的牺牲品仪式。宰杀掉的牺牲品将分发给穷困的人家享用。

Christmas 圣诞节

Christmas, the day Jesus Christ was born, is an important occasion for Christians in Malaysia. On Christmas Eve, Christians go caroling at the houses of their friends and relatives. Midnight services are also held in churches. Besides homes and churches, the revelry and yuletide spirit of Christmas is also felt in shopping complexes, hotels and restaurants. Christmas trees, bright lights and men dressed up as Santa Clauses add to the joyous and festive air.

圣诞节，也称为“耶苏瞻礼、主降生日”，是基督教徒的重要节日。圣诞前夕，也是平安夜，教徒们纷纷到教友的家去报佳音，还有到教堂去迎接圣诞节的来临。为了增添圣诞节的气氛，各大购物商场、酒店、餐厅等都会以圣诞节为主题而特别布置一番，而且还少不了那位最重要的灵魂人物吧，就是圣诞老人了！
